This is the true story of a cat who found his very own adoptive family. A big, long-haired, friendly, black and white “tuxedo” cat, he was originally taken into Cat’s Cradle’s care when Jenna and Nancy rescued him off the streets of Victoria. He had been scrounging in garbage bins for food, and the name “Scrounger” just seemed to fit. After being checked out by Cat’s Cradle, Scrounger was placed in a foster home near Douglas/Dallas Road. Unfortunately he darted out of the house one day when the garbage was being put out. And he just vanished. A thorough search of the neighborhood turned up nothing. Posters were put up asking James Bay area residents to report any sightings. Nothing. Scrounger was “on the lam” ! After almost a month, news reached us that a cat that looked like Scrounger had turned up several miles away in Oak Bay. YES,,, our big adorable Scrounger had been located. Alan, who lives in Oak Bay, saw our poster in James Bay. Alan and his mom Jane had been feeding Scrounger for three weeks. It turned out that Scrounger survived by going into cat and dog doors along his way and grabbing meals while the people were at work or asleep. He startled one of Jane’s neighbours at 1 a.m. at the dog food bowl in his kitchen! We're not sure if our boy walked at top speed down the beach a few miles, or somehow got a ride to Oak Bay, but he found his own new home on a side street off Beach Road! Jane and her family have three other tuxedos and Scrounger makes a fourth - a very formal group – and after a trial period they were happy to adopt him into their family. Scrounger is now well established in the new home that he picked for himself, and he no longer has to make a living on the streets !
