Well, where to begin?
Laura (my partner) and I decided it was time to get a cat. We spent some time discussing whether to get pure bred or adopt a rescue. Laura and I made a deal: she wanted a cat and so I could pick the breed.
I thought I wanted a Savannah or a Bengal (I wanted a dog and I figured a cat as big as a dog might do the trick, but she said no…) After much discussion and researching, we decided to adopt a stray kitten. I spent some time looking up various organizations that might have kittens.
We eventually found Cat's Cradle Animal Rescue. I contacted Beverly via email, and that same day I received a phone call from her. She was multi-tasking her phone work and a bath. It was interesting and I'm sure it connected me in her memory. After an initial phone interview to determine our viability as adopters, our phone number was given to a woman, also named Laura, who was fostering some new kittens in Sooke.
One week later we picked up Ronin and took him home. Despite some plaintive meows in the car on the way back to our condo in Victoria, things went exceptionally well. The foster home of Laura and Cat's Cradle had done an amazing job raising their kittens. Within 2 hours of getting home Ronin was eating, drinking, cuddling and using his litter box (a great relief to me and a month later he has not made a mistake yet).
As I grew up on a farm, I have seen my share of cats and this is very non-typical cat behaviour, especially his "shower routine". He will actually sit on the edge of the tub and play in the water while you are in the shower!
All in all it has been an amazing experience working with Cat's Cradle. While a thorough screen of both Laura and I was conducted, the screening was also very streamlined and easy to do.
Best of all, Ronin has been a great addition to our family !
