Note
from Beverly

I am taking a bit of a hiatus from adopting out cats and kittens and responding to telephone calls. I need a couple of weeks to get some things in order, thoroughly clean my place and generally take some R and R. Volunteers are still welcome to visit the cats; however, please let me know when you are planning to come just for the next couple of weeks. Joan will be dealing with a lot of the day to day CCAR stuff with input from me if necessary. She will pass any queries that I need to handle onto me. Joan’s number is 250-656-1169 or prefereably e-mail her at joaniemdoug@shaw.ca. I will still be available for emergencies.

Relocation
Relocation

Urgent!    Does anyone have any thoughts on how we can get a pregnant cat from Prince George to Victoria? Air Canada does fly this route and I have someone looking into this. The cat was left behind when the owners left during the night. I wish I didn’t hear of these situations, I know they happen all the time, but when I actually know of something like this, I am compelled to try and help. We will pay for transport.   Beverly

Free
Money!

Don't forget to collect Island Farms bar codes that start 57726 (milk, cream, yogurt, ice cream etc.). Island farms will reimburse us .03 cents per code! It doesn't sound like a lot but it will mount up quickly. Call Kathy Hansen at 250 656-3144 for more info or to arrange a pick up.

Break
Time

31 Aug 10 - Has been a bit of a crazy time at Bev’s house this last couple of weeks. Lots of kittens, lots of people coming and going, wonderful volunteers helping out, but I am really tired and want to ask that no-one come and visit me on Wednesdays for the next couple of weeks. I would like to just try to take a bit of time off from everything (as much as is possible anyway) just to energize and perhaps have a nap one afternoon a week. What a novel concept!   Beverly

Changing
of the
Guard
30 Aug 10 - After three plus years of developing and updating our web site, Gord H is stepping down for a much needed break. Gord approached me before we had a site when he was attending a fund raising event we were holding and volunteered to develop a web site. At that time, we were not quite sure if we needed a web site!! Go figure, how quickly things change. Anyway, we came up with the current CCAR site which is virtually unchanged (except for content of course) from the days (and it took about 5 weeks to develop it) it was developed. I know we have an awesome web site, I get so much positive feedback on it and this is all due to Gord. Thank you Gord for everything you have done. You have been so very instrumental in getting almost 600 cats and kittens and a few dogs, adopted since CCAR came into being.

Adrian Fletcher is going to be our new webmaster, ably assisted by daughter Jaymie. Adrian and his family fostered a litter of kittens for CCAR this past spring, and Adrian actually cut the cords on the litter as momma Lucy (not a good momma and some of you may remember her) would not deal with this. Welcome Adrian and Jaymie and thank you for stepping in to do this. It is a lot of work and we really appreciate it.    Beverly

28 Aug 10 - "Tessie" is looking for a new home! She's about 15 months old and has the loudest purr! Take a look at Tessie's page for more about Tessie.

Labour
of Love
28 Aug 10 - Take a look at this link. Sure wish we could build something like this around here!   Beverly

ADOPTION
FAIR
UPDATE
25 Aug 10 - Wow Ladies, thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you great ladies (no men!) who came and ran the Adoption Fair yesterday. I was completely useless I know as I was dealing with little Charlie who I had to rush to the vet and who, sadly, died last night. I am so very upset about this but we really tried to save him and everything was done for him that could have been done. He was a sweetie and I sure do wish that we didn’t lose these little things. But it is inevitable with the numbers that we help, doesn’t make it any easier though.
The event would not have been the success it was without all of you; I won’t name names as my memory is failing these days and I would surely miss someone. You were all awesome, great and fabulous. I am so very, very grateful to have the privilege of knowing so many committed and caring ladies. [Beverly]

THANKS 21 Aug 10 - Our appreciation to both Muffet and Louisa's and Janet's Tea Shop for displaying our collection boxes in their store and our heartfelt thanks to their generous patrons for donating to Cat's Cradle.

ADOPTION FAIR HELP 20 Aug 10 - As you know, we are having an Adoption Fair at my house this coming Sunday. Many of you have indicated you will come by to help. Stupidly, I haven’t kept track of who is planning to come. Can all of you who are coming drop me an e-mail and let me know roughly what time you will be here so I can make sure I have enough people here. I want to restrict access to certain rooms in my home as I don’t want people traipsing willy nilly through my home and will need people to help with that. If you haven’t said you can come, and you think you can, can you e-mail me please at beverlyarcher@shaw.ca  thanks everyone. [Beverly]

ADOPTIONS UPDATE 20 Aug 10 - Kittens "Ginger Kid" and "Waffles" have been adopted.

SAY A
PRAYER
FOR A
KITTEN

19 Aug 10 - Recently, a little black male kitten, no name, died at the vet's. He spent some time in my hallway, was a bit shy and I didn't really know him. He was a sleek black boy who was starting to feel comfortable. He got sick, and went to the vet and had to stay and sadly died. This poor little guy was one of many kittens I have had at my house and, of course, I am feeling very badly that I didn't know him, he didn't have a name and that I didn't spend more time with him. He never stood out as he was jut another black kitten, but his life was all too short and he deserved a much longer, happier life. I tried to save him, but we know what killed him and there was really nothing that could be done for him. Please say a prayer for him and all the thousands of kittens that we cannot help. [Beverly]

THE
ANIMAL
RESCUE
SITE
18 Aug 10 - Bev recently learned how many animals are killed in California for lack of food & shelter in the economic downturn. Perhaps this would help save some. You can actually go back and click it once a day---maybe more often---and some animal can live another day.
     go to
http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/

the link is at the middle top of the screen, almost the first thing to appear.

XMAS
MICE?
17 Aug 10 - Sophie B, who makes the wonderful felted cat beds, has a great pattern for a felted catnip mouse, much approved by the most discerning of cats. Would anyone be interested in coming to my house in the fall for an afternoon of instruction on knitting mice. Sophie has offered to take the knitted mice away to felt but perhaps she could teach us how to do that too? Sophie? We did a learn how to crochet mice last year and it was a lot of fun. If you think you would be interested, let me know and I will set something up for sometime in Sep/Oct, in time for Christmas mice perhaps? [Beverly]

A GREAT QUOTE ! 13 Aug 10 - I did not ask to be born, I am a good dog/cat, I may not be perfect or show quality but I do deserve a wonderful life, to have a loving home and because of this thing called "Rescue" I will get my second chance! Adoption saves lives! If you "save" mine, I will "complete" yours!

TODAY'S CHUCKLE 13 Aug 10 - This news item is several weeks old... but still amusing :)
I got a laugh out of this. Hope you will too. Deb W and daughter Shay are fostering a kitten for CCAR and, as most foster homes are, they are watching EVERYTHING this kitten does (and doesn’t do). Got a call last night, the kitten hasn’t pooped in about 24 hours so I told them to call me first thing if she still doesn’t produce and we would get her to the vet. Two e-mails I received this morning, both written last night – from Deb who was a work “while I was counting all of the money in the office, Shay phoned and told me the great news ,  she pooped   !!!  the kitten that is, other wise  it would be too much info” From Shay “AT 9:05PM SHE DID A HUGE POOP SO ALL IS GOOD FOR NOW
We are all breathing a sigh of relief and I have no doubt that the kitten did too!

12 Aug 10 - The 6 kittens in this litter are all super-socialized and will be ready for adoption in early September. They can be reserved via a non-refundable deposit, if you are ready to commit now ! Photos for Bev's Beauties are in the 'Our Kittens' section.

12 Aug 10 - "Crystal" is a lovely young 2 to 3 year old cat, now available for adoption. Check her out in the 'Our Cats' section.

12 Aug 10 - "Edgar" is a lovely, friendly, curious boy who is ready for adoption. His page is in the 'Our Kittens' section.

11 Aug 10 - Lovely "Laeticia" has been adopted by Stacey F, her long time foster mom. Stacey says that she is the perfect cat and is happy to be another Foster 101 failure. "Laeticia" is a wonderful black cat, those black cats are just the best, right Stacey?

HOT GUN 10 Aug 10 - Does anyone have a hot gun (used to strip old paint) that one of our volunteers could borrow as she wants to use it to make some cat toys to sell for CCAR? It will be returned of course. Please contact Beverly if you can help.

TABLE AT
FESTIVAL
for
ANIMALS
10 Aug 10 - We desperately need volunteers to man a CCAR table at a Festival for Animals being held in conjunction with an art show Sunday, Aug15th at Coast Collective in the Esquimalt Lagoon area. I will set up for 10:00 but need volunteers for a shift 11:00- 2:00 and 2:00-4:00. The table , info etc has to be dismantled at 4 so will need someone for the last shift that has access to a van or suv. Please contact Joan 250 656-1169 or joaniemdoug@hotmail.ca

9 Aug 10 - A 12 week old litter of "Tine's Kittens", consisting of 3 females  "Lita", "Mirza" and "Naila" is now up for adoption. Go to the 'Our Kittens" section to see their photos.

THANKS 9 Aug 10 - A big, big thanks to Gord, our webmaster, and Andrea who organizes my jumbled postings for the web site. I have inundated both of these great volunteers lately, and I apologize for that. These two folks are so vital to CCAR as they make it possible to get the animals adopted and get information out there about CCAR. Thank you both and I really, really do appreciate all you do.

THANKS 8 Aug 10 - Thanks to the Sidney Bottle Depot Staff (for thinking of CCAR) and all the wonderful folks who returned their empties to the Bottle Depot on August 1st and donated the money to CCAR. We received a cheque for over $337.15 from these donations! Thank you everyone, very much appreciated.

FIVE MORE KITTENS ! 8 Aug 10 - Five more kittens are ready for adoption. Look for "Tabalicious", "Ginger Kid", "Waffles", "Gordon" and "Fluffakitten" in the 'Our Kittens' section.

TWO MORE CATS ! 8 Aug 10 - Two more cats for adoption - go to the 'Our Cats' section to see "Natasha" and "Gabby".

7 Aug 10 - "Punto" is new to the site. His web page is in the 'Our Cats' section.
SEVEN
NEW
KITTENS
7 Aug 10 - Seven new kittens are now available for adoption. Look for "Rambo", "Brazil", "Tipper", "Wally", "Sleeky Boy", "PurrCilla" and "PurrTricia" in the 'Our Kittens' section.

THANKS 7 Aug 10 - Thank you to those of you who offered to help with my untamed kittens. I am overwhelmed and very gratified by the responses I have received. Today was not a great day when I realized how many of our collection boxes were stolen and how little money we are going to make, but I am warmed by all of you who want to help these kittens. Three have gone to Lita today, three will go to Al and Grace tomorrow and two or three are going to Michelle later in the week. Thank you for restoring some of my jaded faith in people.

SMILE
CARDS
6 Aug 10 - Thrifty Foods has just increased our Smile Card allocation from $1,000 to $1,500! We are very grateful for this so keep on using those Smile Cards folks!

FUND-
RAISING
IDEAS
6 Aug 10 - We are trying to come up with ways of making some money. Can I get some feedback on the possibility of us holding a Rummage Sale/Craft Sale/Bake Sale in perhaps October at a nearby church hall? Any thoughts? Would any of you be interested in selling crafts at this and donating a portion of your proceeds to CCAR? Would anyone be able to help out with donating some baked goods? For the rummage sale, would like to have a couple of locations in town where people can drop off items for the rummage sale, with the items being thoroughly checked first for saleability.

CLEANING
HELP
NEEDED
5 Aug 10 - Is anyone interested in coming to my house one sunny afternoon and helping me pressure wash and clean out my feral pen? It is hard work as I need to remove everything from the pen, not the cats though, and wash everything down thoroughly, let it dry and then put new bedding and scratching posts in there. I would really appreciate some help with this.

COLLECTION
BOX
REPORT
5 Aug 10 - The final total for the number of Thrifty Collection Boxes that were stolen is 27!! We placed 117 boxes in the various Thrifty Stores. If you are reading this and are one of the people who stole our money, I hope you realize that this loss of funds will greatly affect the number of animals we can help. Hope you can live with yourself but you probably can because you are a selfish creep!

BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL 4 Aug 10 - Saw something that saddened me the other day when I was at Broadmead Village. The Pets West Store there has two windows where the display rescue cats for adoption, a commendable program. In the large window, there were several "colourful" kittens, orange, tabby, siamese etc, all sleeping. There were a crowd of people looking and ooohing and aaaahing at these kittens. In the next window, there were two little black kittens putting on a wonderful show, playing and wrestling and not one person was looking at these beauties. People, BLACK CATS ARE WONDERFUL!   I can honestly say that some of the nicest cats I have come across have been black. A lot of the sleek, slender black cats have so much siamese in them, they just didn't get the beige colour. I get so frustrated when I have people coming to look at kittens with a "shopping list" of what they want, short haired, certain colour, certain size, certain sex, friendly, cuddly etc etc. Temperment should be the most important thing and most black cats are everything people want in a cat. I so want to say to some people "you are not buying a dress here!" In fact, I have a couple of times! Promote black cats, let's consider encouraging all rescues to have an "Adopt a Black Cat Month" or something like that.

STOLEN
DONATION BOXES
3 Aug 10 - This is depressing. Last year the Thrifty collection boxes for the month of July collected almost $6,000. This year, we have had a huge number of our boxes STOLEN and I am guessing that we will be lucky to bring in $2,000, which is a huge blow as we are almost out of funds and will likely have to stop helping any new animals in the near future. I am so disgusted that people have stolen from us and probably put animals in jeopardy because we cannot help them. What is wrong with so many people??

ADOPTIONS UPDATE 3 Aug 10 - Kittens "Charlie" and "Meeps" have been adopted !

TYCHO
(aka TINO)
3 Aug 10 - I was asked by Tino’s adopters to relay the following. Apparently, I mentioned that he was named after an “Astrologer”, ooops, not so, apparently, it is an Astronomer, a completely different thing! “Tino's name has officially changed to Tycho (rhymes with Tino). Actually, his full name is Tycho Brahe Moss, named after the Danish astronomer and alchemist (combining my and Larissa's "talents"). Note: Derek is an Astronomer and Larrissa a Pharmacist.
On 29 December 1566 Tycho lost part of his nose in a duel. For the rest of his life, he wore a replacement made of silver... and gold (or copper, at times). I thought this "abused" look also fit in with our Tycho...”

CAN YOU SPARE AN HOUR A DAY? 2 Aug 10 - Can you spare an hour or so a day for a couple of weeks this summer to work with some scared, unsocialized kittens. If I can’t socialize these kittens to where they can be adopted, they will, unfortunately, have to go back to a not very nice place as I am not able to keep unadoptable cats at my home. The place where they came from is infested with mites, the vet who fixed one cat said she had the worst case of mites he had ever seen. We had to have one male euthanized as he was FIV positive and in dreadful shape. We would supply you with a pen to put the kittens in at first and everything you need for this pen, and food and litter of course. The kittens are not vicious, just scared and not used to being handled. I am working on getting them to the point where they relax a little when held but they need a lot more holding than I can give them. I have about 10 kittens and would just ask you to take two for just two weeks and work with them I will show you everything you need to know. A total of about an hour a day is all these kittens will need to make a huge difference to their lives.

2 Aug 10 - Remember Tino? The amazing little dog who has survived almost insurmountable odds to stay alive? He is now living with Larissa and Derek and their three cats after being fostered with Sabrina and Lori. Physically, he is doing remarkably well with only a slight limp from time to time. Emotionally, he still has a way to go as he found it difficult to leave his foster home with Sabrina and Lori to go to his new home with Larissa and Derek. However, when he first went to Sabrina and Lori, he was very withdrawn and scared and soon become comfortable and part of the family. Larissa and Derek recognize that this little guy will take some time to feel comfortable with them but already, after one week, he is showing signs he is feeling more comfortable. I was very gratified because Tino recognized me and my dogs when Larrisa and Derek brought him to visit. Tino is now named Tiko (after a Scandavian astrologer??) and is one the most durable little dogs I have ever come across and so says Steve Huxter of Transitions, who has donated his time to work with Tiko to help him adjust to his new home. Tiko still cannot do long walks but he will build up to that in time and will eventually be able to achieve the level of activity he had before his terrible accident. To all of you who sent donations and best wishes to this little dog, we cannot thank you enough. As you will see from the photos, this is a different dog to the scared, hopeless little guy who arrived here early in 2010.

BOOK VISITS
IN ADVANCE
1 Aug 10 - Can I ask that until further notice, if you want to come and visit cats and kittens at Beverly's house, you give me a call at 655-6451 or e-mail me? There is a possible issue at my house that I need to make visitors aware of. This is in no way intended to discourage cat cuddlers. We need you desperately as we have four kittens who have not been socialized: they need visitors!  I also have five 3 week old kittens who need visitors too.

1 Aug 10 - Regular visitors to Bev's house may remember Joe, the big, beautiful tabby boy who started out in the semi feral pen, then "graduated" to the hall and become quite sociable. He was adopted and this is one of several photos his new mom sent of him.

NEED
FOSTER

31 Jul 10 - CCAR is desperately in need of people to foster some lovely adult cats. Some are friendly, outgoing cats, some are a little shyer but they all need a place to go and some one on one attention. We can supply everything you need. Contact Beverly if you can help.

SIDNEY
BOTTLE
DEPOT
31 Jul 10 - The Sidney Bottle Depot is asking that people donate the proceeds from their bottle recycling to Cat's Cradle today, Saturday. So, if you have bottles to return, take them to Sidney and donate the money to us, we really need it. Thanks to the wonderful staff at the Sidney Bottle Depot for their support. They are a great bunch of folks who are very friendly and helpful.

30 Jul 10 - The five kittens making up "Laiya's Lovelies" are now 7 weeks old and will be ready for adoption SOON ! They can be viewed now, and reserved for adoption. Check them out in 'Our Kittens'.

30 Jul 10 - You'll find the four cute little black and white kittens of the "Sooke Sweeties" litter in the 'Our Kittens' section.  These guys are now 8 weeks old and are available for immediate adoption.

FOSTER
HOMES
FOR
PUPPIES
29 Jul 10 - We may be looking for foster homes for puppies in the near future. If you can help, please contact Beverly. There will need to be someone home during the day, except for brief absences. You will need a separate, easily cleaned area for the puppies. Everything will be supplied, including all the advice you need.

SOOKE
SWEETIES
28 Jul 10 - An adorable litter of black and white kittens will be posted on the site soon. They are the "Sooke Sweeties", fostered by Laura K. They all look quite similar. These kittens can be viewed right now and are ready to go to new homes right away.

ORCHIDS 28 Jul 10 - I would love to know who put the beautiful orchid on my kitchen counter a couple of days ago? It is gorgeous and I have no clue who put it there. Have asked everyone I can think of. Who is my secret admirer???

THRIFTY
FOODS
27 Jul 10 - Thanks to Michelle T, Connie B, Kara D and Joan D, we have the pick up of collection boxes at Thrifty Foods all sorted out. No more help required. The next task will be counting ALL the money, we are hoping for anything close to last year’s take of nearly $6,000. Fingers crossed :))

THANKS 27 Jul 10 - Many thanks to both Pharmasave and Dragon Horse (in Sidney). They consistently do extremely well in collecting money for Cat's Cradle.

CORRECTION
re ISLAND
FARMS
FUNDRAISER
27 Jul 10 - Correction re Island Farms fundraiser. They will reimburse us for Island Farms product with bar codes that start with 57726 milk, ice cream, yogurt anything that Island Farms produces.
Nature's Best products have the same bar code, but are NOT included in this program.
Just cut off the bar code, save in a batch of 50 and contact Kathy Hansen aim-high@shaw.ca  to arrange pick up of the batches of bar codes.
Tell all your friends and if you need more info Kathy will be glad to help.
COLLECTING THE COLLECTION BOXES AT THRIFTY STORES 26 Jul 10 - On Saturday July 31st, later in the day, we need to pick up our Thrifty Collection Boxes. Are there people who could help with this and take the burden off Joan and I? We need pick ups at the following stores, Fairfield, Quadra, James Bay, Broadmead, Cloverdale, and Hillside. We have the others covered. If you can help, can you contact Beverly? You will need a heavy duty box or plastic container to carry the (we hope) very heavy collection boxes so the bottoms don’t fall out. I will also forward an e-mail authorizing you to pick up.
Interestingly, an RCMP officer contacted me and told me he had arrested a man for possession of stolen property; he had two of our collection boxes in his car with a total of $2.08 in them! I said, go ahead, press charges, how dare he steal from us! [Beverly]

ISLAND
FARMS
FUNDRAISER
25 Jul 10 - Can you help the kittens? CCAR has signed on for a fundraiser with Island Farms. They will reimburse us for Island Farm product with bar codes that start with 57726 milk, ice cream, yogurt anything that Island Farms produces.
Nature's Best products have the same bar code, but are NOT included in this program.
Just cut off the bar code, save in a batch of 50 and contact Kathy Hansen aim-high@shaw.ca  to arrange pick up of the batches of bar codes.

NO NEWS
TODAY !
24 Jul 10 - No news is good news :))

SPAY/NEUTER
YOUR PETS !
23 Jul 10 - In just 7 years, one un-spayed female cat and one un-neutered male cat and their offspring can result in 420,000 kittens.

PLEASE
COME
22 Jul 10 - Beverly will soon have LOADS of cats and kittens that need company. Please come and visit them and perhaps give her a hand with scooping, feeding and medicating as they all have to be wormed.

21 Jul 10 - "Hobbs" is an easy-going brown tabby who needs a home. Read his page in the 'Our Cats' section.
21 Jul 10 - "Pip" is a very small kitten who needs a short-term foster home, with the option to adopt him. His page is in the 'Our Kittens' section.
21 Jul 10 - "Russell" is a lucky fellow, having survived a serious dog bite on his abdomen. Read about this friendly boy in the 'Our Cats' section.
KITTENS
PASSED
20 Jul 10 - We lost two dear little kittens this week, not sure what was wrong but we all did what we could to save them. Thanks to Michelle and Sher, grieving foster moms, Dr. Wilson, Elk Lake Vet Hospital and the ladies who rescued these kittens who both died knowing that they were safe and loved.

CONSIDER INDOORS 19 Jul 10 - Please consider keeping your cat as an indoor cat. It is a dangerous world out there with predators, and, worst of all, cars. Lately, we have had several calls about lost and missing cats, probably people letting their cats out more due to the nice weather. However, the eagles are feeding their babies and if you have ever seen a cat carried off by an eagle, you will never let your cat out again. I know. How many dead cats do you see on the road? And how many do you not see that drag themselves off into the bush to die a lonely and painful death. You will be keeping our bird population safer and, best of all, you will have a cat that will live an average of 5 years longer than an outside cat, will seldom need flea treatments, unless you bring in a flea, and a cat that will rely on you for everything and be the wonderful companion you want.

RAFFLE
DRAW
31 JULY
18 Jul 10 - The raffle for the print, “Nothing but Cats”, and the boiled wool cat bed, will be drawn on July 31st at a location yet to be determined.

SIDNEY
MARKET
29 JULY
18 Jul 10 - We will be participating in the Sidney Market on July 29th to try to sell more raffle tickets. Both prizes, the print "Nothing but Cats" and the boiled wool cat bed, will be on display at this event. Thanks Deb for your work on this and special thanks to Lenore who is producing the tickets for this and the previous raffle we ran. We must not forget Dr. Wilson who so kindly donated the print and Sophie B who makes the boiled wool cat beds. What great supporters we are privileged to have. We are hoping to raise a good amount from the raffle with all this publicity.

17 Jul 10 - If you see a lost cat, short-haired, small, black/grey/white dairy-cow-spotted tabby (with stripes too) in the area of Belmont Ave between Haultain & Bay streets, please phone 250-294-0669 or email: garmeson@gmail.com

BEV IS
AWAY
16 Jul 10 - Bev is away on Friday and Saturday, back to work on Monday afternoon. Contact Joan during her absence, preferably by e-mail. Don’t leave messages on Bev’s telephone, there will be too many to deal with upon her return !

15 Jul 10 - Here’s an update on Tino, the little dog who was in an accident on Pat Bay Hwy. He is doing very well in his foster home and has bonded so well with his foster mom. He is going on a sleepover this weekend to a wonderful potential permanent home with Larissa and Derek who recognize that his acceptance and bonding with them may take some time. We are keeping our fingers crossed that this will work out well but there are a number of variables that may affect the outcome. Steve Huxter of Transitions, who has been advising on Tino, is so impressed with the resilience and determination of this little guy and says that he has never come across a dog who has overcome the issues that Tino has. Read "Valentino's" full story in the 'Our Dogs' section.

WHAT IS AN ANIMAL?

14 Jul 10 - Here is a beautiful quote from the book “The Outermost House” by Henry Benston. It has been widely used as a kind of mantra for rescuers and animal rights activists.
"We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature, and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth."

HIRE A
BOOK-
KEEPER
12 Jul 10 - I [Beverly] would love to get some more bookkeeping clients to help keep CCAR solvent as I donate back what I make from any bookkeeping I do. I can do bookkeeping for a sole proprietor and small businesses and can also do payroll. I ran my own successful business for a number of years. I charge $20 an hour and you will be helping CCAR if you hire me to do your bookkeeping. I also like doing it believe it or not!

SPECIAL
MOMMA
CAT
9 Jul 10 - I have a very special momma cat at my house. She is a lovely tawny tabby girl with gold eyes, flinches when you stroke her and will hiss out of fear but has never tried to hurt me. She arrived with 5 two week old babies who are now almost 8 weeks. She has been just the best mom, always available for her kids and, best of all, she has allowed a very small, undersized kitten, four months old, who wasn’t eating too well, to nurse from her. He is now doing much better and only nurses occasionally. In addition, she has welcomed to snuggle with her, two orphaned kittens, about 6 weeks old. They didn’t want to nurse from her, but sure want to snuggle and she is happy to oblige. This momma is incredible and I want to make sure we find an incredible home for her. She will need some time to trust people, but I just know she is going to be a wonderful companion

KITTEN
SITTER(S)
NEEDED
5 Jul 10 - Bev has three black kittens in her living room pen, ranging in age from about 4 months to 8 – 10 weeks. All are pretty scared and would greatly benefit if someone could come by and sit in the pen and hold them and play with them. I can even put the tv on and you can watch tv from “your cage.” I am away on Friday and Saturday and it would be wonderful if these kittens could get some attention during that time. They will not bite, might just hiss, means they are scared but once you cuddle them, they will purr up a storm. Call Bev for access information if you can come while I am away.

CAT

COLLECTION
BOXES IN THRIFTY
FOODS STORES
3 Jul 10 - Starting on July 1st, CCAR collection boxes will be displayed at all tills in Thrifty Foods stores in the Greater Victoria area for the month of July. We are really hoping these bring in a “good chunk of change” as we are seriously short of funds right now and have been “in the red” a couple of times over the last few weeks. Any thoughts or suggestions from anyone for raising money to help us keep on doing what we are doing would be much appreciated. We have had many expenses of late, particularly vet expenses, and our coffers are sadly depleted. I am really hoping we don’t have to stop taking in any more cats and kittens but it may come to that, at least until we are somewhat solvent again.

HELP NEEDED
TILING
SEMI-FERAL
PEN
2 Jul 10 - Is anyone willing to donate some time to helping tile my semi feral pen? I want to make it easier to clean and also put an in-floor heating system in part of the pen so the cats can have a lovely heated floor to lie on. My contractor tells me that the labour cost would be quite high for tiling and I am hoping that someone or two out there would be willing to help out. There is no great hurry on this, could be done in the fall, but I would like to have some timetable in place. It is apparently a pretty easy area to tile with nothing too difficult to work around. The hardest thing would be keeping the cats off the floor while it is drying so it would be better done in the slightly warmer weather so I can herd them outside into the outdoor run and keep them out there while the floor is setting or whatever it has to do. Contact Beverly if you can help with this project.

1 Jul 10 - "Maurice" is a lovely black and white 2 year old male who just loves love'n. Read his story in the 'Our Cats' section.

A SAD WEEK 1 Jul 10 - Last week was a sad week at my house. I lost two adorable little kittens, one to a tragic accident and one finally succumbed to an awful infection that we just couldn’t get under control. He died in my arms yesterday at 2pm, just an hour before another vet visit. Please say a prayer for these precious little souls whose time here was too short.
